Case Study:
Wireless VPN Using Teletronics 5800 series SLAB Radios:
At the BHA our network covers most of Brownsville . We have 4 remote offices around the city which require a stable connection to the Administrative LAN. This connection supply's bandwidth to the remote sites for VoIP telephones and applications running on the main server. In addition all internet traffic is router from the remote sites through the Administration building. At the beginning of 2008 I was faced with a rather large problem and the solution was wireless.I researched several wireless equipment providers and choose Teletronics for their price speed and dependability. Here is the Case study
Overview: The Brownsville Housing Authority used ATM over DSL to connect the administration site with three remote offices. The Administration site uses a local loop T1. The remote sites utilize loops made up of 2 192Kbps, 1 144kbps, and 1 Shared line ADSL circuit. This allows for VoIP and internet service via the LAN network located at the administration site. The VPN is provisioned by AT&T and Managed by Newedge Networks. The circuits all go from point A to the switch maintained by Newedge located in Brownsville and then to the Administration site. Therefore, these connection by pass the internet and provided in theory a secure network.
Perceived problem: The VPN is totally managed by Newedge networks. All routers and additional equipment is maintained by staff located in Vancouver . When problems arise all the Brownsville Housing authority can do is call for technical support. At the present time these calls are taking up to 4 hours or more to place depending on hold times. The end users are left with no VoIP phone service and no internet. In addition the speeds at which data is transferred are inadequate for VoIP and Internet to be used simultaneously.
Solution: The Brownsville Housing Authority wished to explore alternative methods of delivery for broadband to the remote sites. Preferably via some type of WiFi solution. The reason for this is two parts. First, it The Brownsville housing authority would retain all aspect of Management on the network. Thus, allowing for instant troubleshooting and repair. Second, The Brownsville Housing Authority would not incur the monthly management fee associated with the current VPN. / (approximately $660.00) per month and ownership of the Equipment.
